The Scrimmage that Felt & Lived like a Game. Texas Longhorns emerge Victorious 10-8 over the Div. 3 Southwestern Pirates

 Cold Night, Hot Lacrosse Action. 

January 30th 2026.

On a chilly cold winter night, The Texas Men's Lacrosse team began their 2026 Spring season with a Scrimmage vs the Div. 3 Level Southwestern Pirates from Georgetown, TX. It was an abundant crowd, that was well-bundled up and coated for a cold evening. Those of us fans whom did show up in person, were gifted an intense match of legit dual-team effort, timely coach strategized time-outs and impressive lacrosse gameplay action. 

 The game in general was refereed fairly, as both teams were able to play aggressively and yellow flag penalties were only thrown when warranted.

Some basic insights I gathered from Southwestern parents and alumni in the crowd. Southwestern is a small 1,200+/- person Methodist religion based, liberal arts college, with yearly tuition at an astronomical $60,000 per year. A Southwestern parent with a son playing on the Division 3 Level team informed me their active players usually get roughly half ($30,000) covered in tuition as an academic/athletic type scholarship. The Southwestern Pirate Lacrosse student athletes must then keep up their grades to keep the financial assistance. They are the only Non-MLCA Lacrosse team in the state of Texas.

The actual game was intense, low scoring and well defended. Our University of Texas Men's team did an excellent job of weathering long assault half court Southwestern possessions with countless shots on goal. The Texas defense and goalie stood strong and for the majority of time kept Southwestern from scoring goals and cashing in. The Texas Offense managed to manufacture some goals and at Halftime the Score was 4-2 favoring the Longhorns. 

 The second half was more of the same. Again this "scrimmage" played out as a fiery, hard-hitting and thoughtfully coached game. With just 6:24 minutes left in the 4th quarter on Caven field, the games was tied 8-8. It could have gone either way? Which team could score and close out the win? 

The Good news, was on this winter evening in the middle of Austin, Texas, the Texas Longhorns emerged victorious! They scored a goal to go up 9-8. Immediately followed by ferocious defense and then gasped out a clearing. #41 Jack Eigen capped off the win, with an emphatic close-out goal and some inspiring words, for a final score of 10-8.
