Texas Longhorn Lacrosse kicked off a new chapter today at the Sports Metroplex in far northeast DFW suburbia, urban-spalling Melissa, Texas, under interim head coach Travis Mayor. Entry fee for the weekend tournament is set at $12 per day or $25 for the full weekend.

This marked the team’s first game following a recent coaching change. According to a Texas Lacrosse Alumni Executive Board member, the transition came down to fit: “Coach Lou and the team were just not a good match.” With Mayor stepping in—previously the lead assistant—there was a sense of curiosity about how the team would respond.

A Slow Start Turns Competitive

The opening stretch showed some early nerves. Texas looked a bit sluggish coming off the bus, while Ole Miss Rebels men's lacrosse came out energized for an actual playoff game. Ole Miss fired off several strong, confident shots, keeping the game competitive through the first quarter and into the middle of the second quarter.

At one point midway through the second quarter, the score hovered circa Texas 5 – Ole Miss 4. It felt like a real contest that was up for grabs.

The Turning Point

Everything shifted during a second-quarter timeout. Whatever Coach Mayor told his players in that huddle clearly landed. From that moment forward, Texas Longhorns Lacrosse flipped a switch, raced way ahead on the scoreboard—and cruised to a playoff victory.

The Longhorns launched into a dominant scoring run during the 2nd quarter paired with a suffocating defense. It was one of the most epic game swinging runs, I've ever witnessed in a lacrosse game! No B.S.

#39 Texas Attackman Takes Over

Leading the charge was Texas attackman #39, Xander Rosen who delivered a standout performance. He may not be the most physically imposing player on the field, but his game is built on finesse, awareness, and precision, with an occasional sneak attack.

He was "cooking with grease" —racking up an estimated 4–5 goals and 2–3 assists before halftime alone. His ability to create space, finish creatively, and keep his head up to pass to his teammates was impressive.

By halftime, the miniscule scoreboard told the story:

Texas had completely taken control. The energy shift was palpable—not just on the field, but on the sidelines. While checking the modest scoreboard, you could overhear Ole Miss Rebel players already talking about postgame plans around Dallas that involved ice cold beer and a Rodeo. Ole Miss appeared willing to accept their losing fate.

Second Half: Depth and Development

The second half became more about managing the game and giving opportunities to the entire roster. Texas rotated in a large number of backup players, including the second-string goalie, who stepped in and performed admirably.

The sideline remained lively and supportive, with teammates cheering on every player who got a chance to contribute—especially meaningful in a playoff setting.

A slow start gave way to a dominant performance, highlighted by explosive offense, strong defensive stands, and a clear response to new leadership. If this game is any indication, Coach Travis Mayor’s impact is already being felt—and Texas looks poised to build on this momentum.
